Rugged as all get out, good solenoids, and a good Force Feed Back (FFB) joystick, even if you do not use the features like gunshake, which I personally find a little hokey, or hit effects, just for the control forces alone, does things that no mechanical spring can do as far as transmitting a better feel for what is going on with your virtual ship. For what it is worth the Microsoft Force Feedback 2 is the best single joystick ever made in my opinion. I recommend that you shop around to find the best bang for the buck since usually you pay more at the manufacturer's site, but those are the main options when it comes to joysticks. Both brands can also be purchased from other sites at a reasonable prices as well as the manufacturer's sites. I personally recommend either SAITEK or CH Products. While it is possible to fly this sim with a keyboard and mouse, to get the most out of it a joystick is HI GHLY recommended. Bear in mind that this sim is over a decade old. While this guide can be used with any 1C IL2 product version it is written with IL2 1946 in mind. These might also give you an idea about the graphic potential of IL-2.This thread will be edited and upfdated shortly IL-2 isn't all about shooting, I love flying warbird airshow demos and flying formation in multiplayer.

In addition to a great skin/re-paint download section, they have a "Knowledge Base" with a number of topics to be found here : It includes a number of new flyable airplanes with appropriate cockpits, new sounds (very important for that immersion factor, the original ones were terrible), and some graphics mods for better smoke, clouds, props, and more. The menu music annoyed me too, but it can be turned off in the audio settings.ġ) Check out the unified installer available here: Everything may be visually shiny, but very buggy. I disagree about FSX's "polish," as you put it. IL-2's given me some discipline as a sim-pilot and perhaps even a bit of awareness as a real pilot. If you don't use adequate rudder in IL-2, it will bite you back, especially in the Mustang, notorious for high speed stalls and snap rolls. If you don't use adequate rudder in MSFS, no big deal, you'll keep on flying sideways for hours without a problem.

Even the best of the best add-ons in MSFS as far as 'feel' and flight dynamics, the RealAir series, still seem too tame. It has the 'feel' of a real fighter/bomber of the period, which most other sims I've tried completely lack.

For me, IL-2, though lacking in some areas, does have a big immersion factor when flight dynamics are concerned.
